About this Tool

What is NotebookLM?

Source-Grounded AI

Unlike traditional chatbots, NotebookLM bases its responses and generations on the documents you provide. This means outputs are directly traceable to your uploaded PDFs, Google Docs, or other text files, aiming for accuracy and relevance to your specific research context.

Information Synthesis

It assists in understanding complex information by summarizing, identifying key themes, and extracting important concepts across multiple sources. This can help reduce the time spent manually reviewing large volumes of text.

Content Generation & Organization

In addition to summarization, NotebookLM can assist with brainstorming, generating outlines, and drafting content within a structured notebook environment.

Privacy-Focused

Uploaded documents are private and are not used to train the underlying AI models or to be shared with other users. Data remains private to the user.

Google NotebookLM is approved to interact with University-internal data; you must be logged in with your @iu.edu email address and IU passphrase to ensure you're using Google at IU rather than the consumer-based Google service.

Key Features for Teaching and Learning

NotebookLM can help transform information into the following formats:

  • Audio Overviews: Condense research findings or interview transcripts into podcasts that you can interact with (like a call-in show).
  • Mind Map Outlines: Extract core concepts and relationships from documents to form the conceptual basis for visual mind maps.
  • FAQs: Generate frequently asked questions and answers directly from source materials.
  • Study Guides: Create detailed study guides with key terms, summaries, and practice questions from textbooks and lecture notes.
  • Briefing Documents: Distill extensive reports into succinct, high-level summaries.
  • Timelines: Identify chronological events and key milestones from historical texts or project documents.
